Local roundup: Lancers to host U Sports track and field championships in 2025

U Sports announced that the University of Windsor has been selected to host that national track and field championships in 2025.

The event will be held at the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse and will mark the 13th time the Lancers have hosted the track and field national championships and the first since 2018.

“The Lancers are thrilled to once again welcome the best student-athletes in track and field to the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse,” Lancers’ director of athletics Stephanie White said in a release. “The University of Windsor has a long and impressive history of success in track and field at the U Sports championships and we are delighted to once again best host this national event.

“The Fairall Fieldhouse, adjacent to our new award winning Toldo Lancer Centre and named after one of the most decorated coaches in the history of Canadian university athletics, will set the stage for what can only be another remarkable and memorable event.”

At this year’s U Sports track and field championships in Saskatoon, the men’s team tied for sixth overall in the team standings while the women’s team placed 10th.

Mariners sign Olson

University of Windsor Lancers forward Sean Olson has signed a standard player contract with the ECHL’s Maine Mariners.

The 24-year-old Olson, who is from Delta, B.C., posted nine goals and 16 points in 18 games during the OUA season for the Lancers and added two more goals in the playoffs as the team reach the U Sports championship tournament.

The six-foot-three, 203-pound Olson spent three seasons with the Lancers with the 2020-21 season canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Curling gold medal

The LaSalle-Windsor Special Olympics curling team won the gold medal at the Stratford Special Olympics Hometown bonspiel.

The team, which practices out of Roseland Golf and Curling Club, features skip Ayla Lalonde, vice Zack Koutsonicolas, second Ian Paulin and lead Daniel Martynse and is coached by Georgia Klym Skeates.

The squad opened the event with a  4-3 win and then took the title with a 6-1 win and will next compete in the national qualifier in Ilderton on Saturday.
