Local roundup: Regina Trappers baseball, track and field, Cougars soccer and more

Regina Trappers baseball 

The Regina Trappers brought home a silver medal from the Baseball Canada Men’s National AAA Championship after losing to Quebec 6-5 in Sunday’s final in Red Deer.

Earlier in the day, the Trappers beat Manitoba 7-4 in the semifinal, to earn a spot in the gold medal game. And in that game, the Trappers found themselves down 5-1 against Quebec in the sixth inning but battled back, before losing on a walk-off home run.

Also at the tournament, Regina’s Griffin Keller won the home run derby with his father Daryl throwing to him. Keller hit a total of 19 home runs in three rounds to win.

Track and field 

At the U16-U18 Canadian Track and Field Championships in Sherbrooke, Que., a few Regina athletes put together medal-winning performances earlier this month. 

Hannah Gates won three U16 gold medals in triple jump, the 1,200-metre race and the 800m, while setting new U16 Saskatchewan records in both the 1,200m (3:35.30) and 800m (2:12.24). 

Gates was also part of the U16 female spring medley relay team which won bronze, along with Brigette Parks, Bauer Gavel and Rosalie Braun. For her efforts, Gates was named the Legion Female Athlete of the Meet. 

Also bringing home medals from the event was Calder Johnston, who won two U16 bronze medals in discus and hammer throw, while Killian Naughton won a U18 silver medal in the 800m. 

Cougars Soccer 

The University of Regina Cougars women’s soccer team opened up the Canada West conference schedule on the weekend with a road trip to Alberta. 

On Friday, the ladies lost 3-2 to the MacEwan Griffins before battling to a 1-1 draw against the Alberta Pandas on Saturday. Lennox Lockhurst scored both goals for Regina in the opening game and Peyton Ens added the lone goal for the Cougars in their second game.

The Cougars will now get set to host the University of Winnipeg on Saturday and University of Manitoba on Sunday at the U of R. 

Wheelchair Basketball

Three Saskatchewan athletes are participating in the senior men’s Wheelchair Basketball Canada camp ahead of the Parapan American Games in Chile in November. 

Nik Goncin (Regina), Garrett Ostepchuk (Regina) and Kyrell Sopotyk (Aberdeen) are among the 17 athletes taking part in the five-day camp in Toronto, which features a mix of on-court practices and off-court activities. 

Lawn bowling 

The 2023 World Bowls Championships begin this week in Australia with Regina product Jordan Kos being one of 10 athletes representing Canada at the event. 

Kos will be playing in women’s pairs alongside Toronto product Kelly McKerihen. Kos will also be playing in women’s fours with Emma Boyd, Baylee van Steijn and Joanna Cooper. 

After the championships wrap up on Sept. 10, Kos will be playing in the singles event of the Champion of Champions tournament from Sept. 11-16, also in Australia. 

Local rugby 

In local rugby action, the men’s city championship was held on Saturday with the Regina Rogues defeating the Campion Grads 48-29 in the final. 

Meanwhile also on Saturday, the South Saskatchewan Women defeated Manitoba 78-10.
