Wiens and Nathan Szombor-Murray captured bronze in men’s 10-m synchro diving at the FINA world championships, giving Canada its first medal in the event.

Wiens, 20, and the 19-year-old Szombor-Murray are in their first year competing together, but success is coming quickly.

“We haven’t been diving together very long,” Wiens — a 2020 Olympian — told Diving Canada. “This was only our second international competition but we’ve been friends since we were 12. We have traveled together ever since we were juniors, and now at the senior level. We’ve been teammates at major events like the Tokyo Olympics. We both spin very fast and have a similar style. I feel as if we’ve been diving together for much longer.”

The Canadian duo scored 417.12 points. Gold went to China’s Yang Hao and Lian Junjie (467.79 points) and silver to Great Britain’s Matthew Lee and Noah Williams (427.71).

“I am really happy with how we dove,” Wiens told Diving Canada. “Our goal was to win a medal here, and we’ve achieved it. This is a really special moment for us.”

Both divers will compete in the men’s individual 10-m event on Saturday.
